NEW REGENT
“NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH” Adapted from a play by the celebrated playwright, W. Somerset Maugham, the all-talking film, “The Letter,” will dose its season at the New Regent Theatre this evening. The leading player is Miss Jeanne Eagels, the well-known Broadway actress, who makes her screen debut in this production. Both her striking personality and her acting ability have been fully exploited. Other prominent members of the cast arc O. P. Heggie, the Australian actor, and Reginald Owen. From tomorrow the Regent will present an entirely new change of programme, comprising both a full-length talking film and talkie features. The chief attraction will be an amusing comedy-drama of modern American life entitled “Nothing But the Truth,” and starring the well-known screen player, Richard Dix. This picture marks his debut into the talkies. The original play by James Montgomery has been followed very closely in the screen version, and the laugh lines that were in the original appear with the same effectiveness from the screen. Victor Schertsinger, who directed, held very closely to the stage action. The story deals with four associates in a broker’s office who bet one of the number that he cannot tell the truth for 24 hours. From the moment that the bet starts the trio who are holding one end accompany the victim and make his life-miserable. An excellent selection of short talking and singing featurettes will also be presented on the new programme.
