WELLINGTON STAGES BIG RACING ATTRACTION
W.R.C. Handicap
NOW A VERY OPEN RACE First Day at Trentham A LOT of money must have been lost when Vertigcrn ivas left in the W.R.C. Handicap (the big event at the opening at Trentham tomorrow of the Wellington R.C. spring meeting) until last Wednesday morning, and with the Rossendale gelding out of the way the big event becomes more difficult than ever. The Southern club has an excellent bill of fare to put over tomorrow, ‘‘Early Bird's” review of the card being appended.
Latest advices from Trentham indicate that the course, is likely to be in excellent order, showers during the week having taken the sting out of the ground. Big fields will be seen out in tho majority of events tomorrow. In the W.R.C. Handicap there will be about 14 runners, and about 20 will line up for the open sprint, the Shorts Handicap. Although 21 remain in the two-yaer-old classic, the Wellesley Stakes, j it is not expected that there will be ! more than a dozen runners, while there j may be less. A start is to be made with the— Glen Hurdles It is likely that the top weights will dominate the situation here, for they have' shown form of recent months. Elysianor, Aberfeldy, Novar, Tresham, Brigadier Bill, Ivapuna, Fine Acre, Beaumont and Peshwa appeal as the most probable, and of this number the actual favourites may be ELYSIANOR TRESHAM Taita Handicap There is plenty of unknown material engaged in the two-year-old handicap, but one thing is certain: the horse at the top of the list, Chief Link, is a near champion, and one can picture the chagrin of his owner in omitting to enter him for the important babies’ classics. Chief Link raced brilliantly at Ellerslie each day, and with all his weight ho will take a lot of beating |On the straight four furlongs at •Trentham. Tray Bond is very speedy, and she must be all the better for her Wingatui run, when she weakened over the last bit of the half mile. Gesture is rapidly improving. Sporting Chance, Joie de Val and Arajean should be improved by their run last week. Good favourites may be CHIEF LINK TRAY BOND Wainui H andicap Commendation was not started at Masterton, and ho may need a race in this very strong field of milers. Cashier is a good soi't, fancied by his trainer Tor the New Zealand Cup, so he must show up at a mile, which, after all, may be his best distance. Merry Damon, Hynanna, Kick Off, Panther, Black Duke, Prickles, Blimp, Keddar, Latin Quarter, Atliolspear, Night Lad, Merry Mint, Rabbi and True Blood! •should all assist in making an inter-’ esting and most open contest, with; this pair the most popular with 1 backers: CASHIER PANTHER Rimutaka Hack Handicap There is a big bunch in this event, including the penalised Masterton winners, Lyn Dhu and Austerity, both of whom go up 51b. It is like iooking for a needle in a haystack, but followers of form may decide to stick to that and declare in favour of AUSTERITY SEA COB Wellington Handicap A splendid field is left in this, the principle race, with Star Stranger Heading the list. He must be almost at his top now, and as he is not badly treated he is to bo given a good chance. Prince Humphrey is still in, so it is apparent that the stable has Hopes that he will show his Michelson Cup form was all wrong. Yoma does not greatly appeal on a hard track, and Seatown is preferred to him. Hoylake has been working well at Riccarton, and Pink Note is a doubtful starter. Piuthair is fancied on account of her staying powers, and In the Shad© is fast coming to hand. If Trainer Jamieson decides to rely on In the Shade only and withdraws Prince Humphrey, o'r vice versa, the cue should ho taken. Spearmiss, Courageous and Rabbi are perhaps the pick of the light weights, the last named especially being very highly thought of. He also appears in the open mile. Probably the fancied trio will be JAMIESON’S ELECT STAR STRANGER RABBI Wellesley Stakes It is more than likely that * the 21 left in this two-year-old classic on acceptance night will be greatly re-
duced by starting time, for there are sure to be many withdrawals. At present those that dominate the situation are Simba and Satisfy, while probable improvers on their latest showings are War Worn, Chrysologv (who did a sensational gallop at Hastings the other morning), Watch Officer, Nimble. Oil King, Tenterden, Pass On and Sporting Chance, and the V. Riddiford bracket of three: Lineage, Peep and Intruder. It should be a good race, with this pair always conspicuous: SIMBA SATISFY Shorts Handicap Sprint races at Trentham always present something unique in the shape of problems of the turf, and tomorrow’s short race promises to be no exception. Paganelli has done a lot of racing. and his efforts to give Silver Paper 51b will be a tit bit. Silvermine is particularly well treated, and on Auckland form is going to be hard to head off. Prince Humphrey Avould probably do well if reserved for this, but the stable also has Eaglet engaged. The filly is undoubtedly brilliant, and in receiving 61b over the weight-for-age scale she is given something to do. Toxeuma and Arrow Lad are very likely sprinters, and White Fang has only to reproduce that Avondale run of his to beat them all. Can he do it .Tgain? Hunting Cry, Gold Cure. Freehold. Goshawk, Speed Light, Aspiring. Banket and Francolin are all speedy, but the machine favourites will be EAGLET SILVERMINE October Hack Handicap There is the usual big bunch of hack sprinters remaining in, and there is every prospect of an upset. A couple that have shown plenty of pace in their races and will be well supported in their outing tomorrow are RICHFIELD COON SONG On Monday the meeting will be concluded, the principal event being the Harcourt Cup, run over a mile and aquarter at weight-for-age.
