SUCCESSOR TO BIRDWOOD

NEW COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF FOR INDIA SIR PHILIP CHETWODE British Official Wireless Reed. Noon. RUGBY, Tuesday. The King has approved the appointment of General Sir Philip Chetwode to be Commander-in-Chief in India, in succession to Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood. With his Majesty’s approval, the Secretary for India has invited FieldMaishal Birdwood, who will complete his five years’ tenure of the appointment on August 5. 1930, to serve a further period of three months from that date. General Sir Philip Walhouse Chetwode, K.C.8., D. 5.0., C. 8., K.C.M G has been Chief of General Staff in India since last year. He was bora m 1869, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Sii George Chetwode. He entered the Army in 18S9 and served in Burmah. South Africa and the Great War. He was promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1909, colonel in 1912, brigadiergeneral in 1914 and general in 1926. At the outbreak of the Great War lie commanded the Fifth Cavalry Brigade.

In 1916 he was appointed to the command of the Desert Force in Egypt, and later commanded the 20th Army Corps in Palestine and Syria. After the war he was successively military secretary at the War Office Deputy-Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Adjutant-General to the Forces and Commander-in-Chief of the Aidershot Command. Besides numerous British decorations lie has several from foreign Powers, notably France and Japan.
