FIRE AT PAPATOETOE
RESIDENCE DESTROYED FAMILY ROUSED FROM SLEEP A six-roomed wooden residence owned and occupied by Mr. Daniel Tye, opposite the Public School. Great South Road, Papatoetoe. was destroyed by fire at 2 o’clock this morning. Mrs. Tye was awakened by the smoke and flames, and roused Mr. Tye, who found the rear portion of the house in flames. They got their two children to safety, and managed to save a piano and a small quantity of personal belongings. Mr. Tye gave the alarm to the Papatoetoe Fire Brigade, which arrived on the scene within a couple of minutes, but the blaze, which was fanned ""by a moderate breeze, enveloped the house before its arrival. That portion of the district is not yet reticulated by the water supply, and the brigade, which is ouiy equipped with a first-aid plant, concentrated its efforts on the sheds at the rear, and managed to effect a good save of them. The house was. insured for £SOO in the South British Office, and the furniture for £250.
