NEW REGENT
“THE LETTER” Tiie fine all-talking picture, “The Letter,” continues to attract large audiences to the New Regent Theatre. The film is one of the most interesting Paramount releases yet presented in Auckland, and many prominent characters in the film world have been associated with its making. The director was Jean de LimLir, and he has made a masterpiece. The film has been adapted from one of the well-known plays by W. Somerset Maugham, and the story is set in a rubber plantation near Singapore. In the leading role Miss Jeanne Eagels, a Broadway stage player of considerable ability, acquits herself well. “The Letter” is her first picture, but her wide experience has enabled her to give a memorable performance, and her appearance in future pictures will be awaited with interest. She proves to possess an appealing personality, which, added to her ability as an actress, makes her a suitable player for the talkies. Opposite Miss Eagels, Mr. O. P. Ueggie, the Australian actor, makes the most of a difficult part. Other featured players are Reginald Owen, Herbert Marshall, Irene Brown, Lady Tsen Mei, the Chinese actress, and Tamami Yoshiwara. The story centres round a letter written by a love-lorn married woman to an attractive bachelor. Throughout the picture the fateful letter comes to light at the most unexpected times, complicating matters and adding to the interest of the story. On the same programme there is a ! bright selection of talking and singing i featurettes, including jazz music by Rudry Vale© and his jazz band, songs by Tito Schipa, the great lyric tenor, a Patlie Sound News and Audio Review, and finally a Music Masters series. “Schubert's Friends,” in music and song. An entirely new programme will be presented at the New Regent on Saturday next, headed by Richard Fix's first talkie, “Nothing But the Truth.”
