PONSONBY SWIMMERS

LOSS OF SECRETARY ANNUAL MEETING Vaißfckle services in secretarial work lost b> the Ponsonby Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club at its annual meeting last evening. Mr. L. Brighton, who has been honorary secretary for six years, announced that >j e would not seek re-election. appreciation of Mr. Brighton’s work was recorded, and he will be presented with the retiring officers’ medal. At the beginning of the season the club owed £3 13s 9d, but it ended with a credit balance of £5 Is 4d. Public support at the two main carnivals, however, was disappointing. The assistance of businessmen was responsible for a profit on the Christmas Lay event, but the harbour race carnival was not financially successful. Club races at Shelly Beach baths on Saturday afternoons added to the finances and encouraged the club spirit. The water polo sevens had made performances, and progress in life-saving work was excellent, several members qualifying for Royal Ufe-Saving Society awards. ciub membership had increased to 163. W. Haasan was third in the national divmg championship for men, and two juniors, L. Smythe and S. Gardiner, bad been extremely successful. Mr. George Moore’s offer to present a cup, won by his son, now deceased, for competition among boys under 17, ivas accepted with thanks. Officers elected were:—Patron, Mr. T. C. Leys; vice-patron. MILFORD’S GOOD YEAR Efficient beach patrols were carried out by squads from the Milford Surf and Life-Saving Club last season, says the report to be presented at the annual meeting tomorrow evening. Two instances of rescues were when a boy was brought ashore after his canoe had capsized a quarter of a mile from the beach and a girl got in difficulties. In the New Zealand contests in Wellington, Milford’s representatives were well placed in the competitions for the Nelson Shield and the Henry Memorial. The Laidlaw Cup was won by A. Faulkner, S. Bacon, W. Fraser and R. Double. The membership was larger, and keenness in training was responsible for greater efficiency. Although fire destroyed £l3 in costumes, the club was in an excellent position. It had £sl 2s 4d in‘ the bank and £3 3s 8d cash in hand.
