New Zealand Cup f The next payment in connection with j the New Zealand Cup is due on Friday night. Entries for minor events close at the same time. Real Good Good judges who saw Rabbi win the big race at Masterton last Saturday were very much impressed with the performance and expect him to race well at Trentham. Rabbi is in both the Wainui and Wellington Handicaps the first day. Chief Rulers Once Again
The Tetrarch horse Chief Ruler was very much in the limelight at Masterton on Saturday. In the first event the two-year-old race, Gesture (Chief Ruler Nottava) beat Princess Betty ( Chief Ruler—Marceline ), and in the second race, the maiden, the first division was won by Relation (Chief Ruler—lmagination). Relation is a half-brother to that one time good horse Suggestion, so it will be interesting to see how lie develops. On breeding he should be a near-cham-pion. Awapuni Youngsters Of the Manawatu contingent entered for the Taita Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, Nimble was the sole defection on acceptance night, but the M or< rs?S eX i take her place in llio Wellesley Stakes and Gesture will represent Mrs. McDonald’s establishment in the Taita Handicap. G W Now supplied three candidates in Princess Betty, Merry Peal (Hunting Song —Merry Roe) and Wallaruh (Hunting Song—Wallaby), but the first-named was slightly sore after her effort at Masterton and she will be an absentee on the opening day. W. Bailey supplies Gran Chico and Sporting Chance, but unless rains falls the latter will probably be numbered among the absentees, for he docs not appreciate hard ground. Rider Injured Lawrence Morrison, a New Zealander. was seriously, injured while he was exercising Rionscup at Randwick yesterday morning. The horse reared and then rolled on its rider, crushing him. lie was taken to hospital, where it was found that his leg had been fractured and lie had received internal injuries.
Knocked About It is stated that Princess Elizabeth got knocked about on the motor trip from Hastings to Gisborne on Monday, and it is doubtful if she will be able to fulfil her - engagements in the hurdle races tomorrow and Saturday. A Double Event According to the latest advices from Marton, L. G. Morris expects to be riding at the New Zealand Cup meeting, opening on November 9. He broke a collarbone while schooling Brigadier Bill at Marton last week, and in passing it may be remarked that the accident synchronised with the arrival of a bonny baby girl in the home. For Cambridge Awappni trainer L. Knapp will take Democratic and Sunart North to the Waikato hunt fixture, while another Southerner who will be in attendance is Birkbeck. A. McDonald will pilot Democratic and Birkbeck in their engagements, while A. E. Stratton will be on top of Sunart. Koatanui Items
Nil’. J. Low, stud groom at Koatanui, reports that Eulalie lias foaled a bay colt to Pombal and that Waterwings has dropped a dark bay colt to Limond, thus a brother to Agrion and the re-cord-priced Zetes. Both mares visit Limond. Nightmarch’s Dam Marsa, the dam of Nightmarch, missed to Shambles last season, so there will be no relative to the Epsom winner offered at the yearling sales. Instead, Mr. G. A. Kain has a youngster by Night Raid from Full Swing (daughter of Marsa). Full Swing, who won two Birthday Handicaps at Dunedin, is by Nassau, so the Night Raid juvenile is richly endowed with staying blood. Scratched Desert Glow was scratched for all engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at 9 o’clock this morning. Hampton Park Sold Mr. A. E. Watkins, of Mission Bay, has purchased the promising two-year-old chestnut colt, Hampton Park (Tarquin—Marcovara), from Mr. E. W. Alison, jun. The price was 500gns. Tarquin, the sire of the Ellerslie youngster, is a son of Phalaris, for many years one of England’s best sires, for whom his owner, Lord. Derby, has refused many big offers. Back from Sydney The hurdler, Bright Land, who was taken to Sydney to race at the Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, arrived back on the Marama yesterday. Riding at Gisborne
Several Auckland horsemen will be riding at the Poverty Bay meeting tomorrow (Saturday). R. McTavish is to ride Gold Lily, Royal Lineage and Pellette, while A. McCormac and L. Dulieu also have engagements at the meeting. Crack Two-year-old The crack English two-year-old, Teacup. enhanced his reputation at Newmarket on July 1, when he won the July Stakes of 1,500 sovs., over five furlongs and 140 yards. He won by four lengths in 1.11. Teacup is by Tetratema (a son of The Tetrarch) from Saucer, who is by the St. Simon horse Chaucer, half-brother to Swynford. Teacup is curiously described as “a ch. or gr. c.” He carried 9st. in this race. He is owned by tlic Aga Khan. Nightmarch Races on Saturday The latest scratcliings for the Melbourne Cup are:—Parkwood, Beauclare and Clarius. Nightmareli's first Melbourne race will be in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Phar Lap and Carradale have been scratched for the Cox Plate.
