CAT GIVES FIRE ALARM
BLAZE AT TE PUKE FART OF SHOP DESTROYED From Our Own Correspondent TE PUKE, Tuesday. The premises occupied by Mr. Peter Vezich in the Main Street, Te Puke, were damaged by fire at an early hour this morning. Mrs. Hicks, who occupies the adjoining shop, was awakened by the mewing of a cat, and got up to see what was the matter with the animal. When she opened the front door of the shop flames from the adjoining building swept across the door. She immediately summoned the brigade. The Alliance Theatre, which is on the western side of Mr. Vezich’s shop, also caught alight, but was quickly extinguished. Mr. Vezich’s window was filled with crackers and these exploded. The rear portion of the building, which was used as a billiard saloon, was undamaged, but the front portion, which was used as a hairdresser’s and tobacconist’s saloon, was completely destroyed. The contents of the shop were insured in the Northern Office for £2OO. The building is owned by Mr. Brookes, of Opotiki.
