GREAT INVENTOR’S WORK
FAMOUS MEN WILL SPEAK TO THE WORLD AN EDISON ANNIVERSARY Australian and N.Z. Press Association (Received 9 a.m.) DEARBORN (Michigan), Mon. President Hoover paid tribute to Thomas A. Edison on the fiftieth anniversary of the latter’s development of the incandescent electric-lamp. The occasion was also the dedication of the Edison Institute of Technology, which is Henry Ford’s gift. The President said: “Mr. Edison, using organised and systematic laboratory research, has been one of the great leaders who converted the pure physics of electricity into a taxable product. Today the Governments of the world levy upward of £60,000,000,000 of new wealth founded
upon electricity. But taxes on new wealth are not the major accomplishments of men of this genius. These accomplishments are rivers of sweat saved from the backs of men, and infinite drudgery relieved from the hands of women,” The voices of Mr. Edison, President Hoover, Mr. Ford, Professor Albert Einstein, and Mr. Owen D. Young are expected to be heard around the world tonight. Two huge radio networks will blanket the United States with their addresses, while short-wave stations will carry the messages abroad. All except Professor Einstein are speaking from the new Edison Institute of Technology. The great German scientist will speak for two minutes through the medium of the transatlantic telephone, one minute in German and the other in English.
