STREET WIDENING

DOMINION ROAD IMPROVEMENTS An attempt to stop further expenditure on the widening of Dominion Road, beyond the terminus, until a report was presented by the engineer, was defeated at the Mount Eden Council meeting last evening. The mover. Cr. W. H. Nagle, claimed that the council had no financial or engineering details of the scheme. This view was supported by Cr. Chappell. The Mayor, Air. E. H. Potter, said that the council had taken advantage of the fact that this portion of the road was not built upon to get the owners to transfer 7ft of their sections to the council for widening purposes. The filling of these properties on one side was proceeding. The work was being done practically for nothing, the spoil being obtained from excavations from the tram extensions’s operations. Persistent protests from Cr. Nagle that the council had no policy in dealing with the scheme were scouted by the Mayor, who pointedly told his colleague that he should have consulted the plan of the work. “You’ve come here at a late hour after the work has been started.” added Mr. Potter. On a vote being taken a motion to stop expenditure on the road widening was defeated.
