COLLEGE COUNCIL MEETS UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S GIFT By means of a series of social evenings at the University College during the year, the Auckland branch of the Federation of University Women raised the sum of £SO, which will be subsidised by the Government. This has been presented to the Auckland college funds in the hope that it will form the nucleus of a fund for the proposed new arts block, stated the president, Sir George Fowlds, at a meeting of the Auckland University College Council yesterday. In moving that the women be thanked for their gift, he stressed the value of social functions as a part of university life, and expressed the hope that the federation would carry on its work.

The Duffus Lubecki Scholarship, which carries £IOO a year, has been awarded to Miss Lucy Moore, M.Sc., wbo was one of the unsuccessful applicants last year. The board of examiners considered her research in botany most worth while, and believe it probable that her discoveries will be printed overseas. Dr. A. H. Cockayne, director of the Cawthron Institute, has praised her work. The W.E.A. bursary will be held next year by Mr. L. J. J. Wilson. Last year two bursaries were awarded. . Tlle council is considering the addition to the law syllabus of hour lectures each week In jurisprudence and one other subject. Professor R. M. Aigie stated that this would require the services of an extra lecturer at a salary of £SO. The Law Society cannot give any further help at present in this direction. Sir George Fowlds and Professor A. P. W. Thomas were reappointed sentatives of the College Council on the New Zealand University Council. A grant of £SO was made toward tile biology museum. A grant of £I,OOO has been approved by the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, for the construction of a caretaker’s cottage on the college grounds. The total cost of the scheme is £1,700.
