PURDIE HAS EVEN BOUT WITH WILLIAMS AMATEURS IN ACTION From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. The Frankton Boxing Association’s amateur tournament was held in the Theatre Royal last evening. There was a fairly good house. Bob Purdie (Auckland), 8.9, beat. Trevor Williams (Frankton), 8.6, in a. fairly even bout. Williams started well, several times driving Purdie to the ropes. In the third there was liltle between them. Williams was still lighting well in the fourth. In the fifth Williams started well and landed a good left to the jaw. In the sixth there was good milling and Purdie floored his opponent, but Williams fought well to the end. Harry Johns (Auckland). 9.5, beat Jock Wilson (Frankton), 9.1. Johns started well, showing a nice style. Wilson got two straight lefts home in the second. Wilson fought well, but Johns showed more science. The next round saw Johns forcing the pace. At the fifth Wilson was fighting well, but Johns was too quick. The last was a good go, eact> getting solid blows in. but Johns was superior throughout. F. Starnes (Frankton), 8.3, beat I+. Wilson X Hamilton), 8.7. H. Bruno (Auckland), 7.3, beat B. Andrews (Auckland),, 7.9. R. Griffiths (Xgaruawahia). 10.9, beat H. Ross (Onehunga), 10.6. P. Pratt (Hamilton), 9.3, beat F. Carr (Frankton), 8.9. The Tutchen Belt went to C. Craig by default. The exhibition bout between C. Craig and his brother. A. Craig, resulted in a decision for the former. T. Horan (Te Awamutu), 10.3. beat Palmer (Frankton), 9.11; Bennett < Papakura), 9.8, beat Fox (Frankton), 9.9. MORGAN BEATS CAREY PROFESSIONALS’ MATCH Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. E. Morgan, lOst Zlb, Olympic feather-weight boxing champion in 1928, beat W. Carey. lOst 31b, in a professional contest tonight, scheduled for 10 rounds. The fight was stopped, in the ninth round. Morgan led all the way. Carey was floored with a. left to the jaw in the eighth round. In the ninth he was down for eight seconds and was dropped again almost immediately He rose on a short count but was again down for eight. Morgan got in a hard left to the jaw and the referee stepped between the boxers, giving his award to Morgan.
