OBJECTION TO BREWERY
PROTEST BY ALLIANCE WINE ORDERS COMPLAINT Dissatisfaction was expressed at a meeting of the Auckland Council of the New Zealand Alliance at the absence of action by the Government in connection with the licence granted for a brewery at Otahuhu. The Alliance contended that the licence was granted without reference to the wishes of residents of the district, and without the endorsement of Cabinet. Sir Joseph Ward had agreed that the licence should not have been granted, it was stated, and had expressed the opinion that it would have been refused had it been referred to Cabinet.
Many resolutions had been submitted to the Government by churches, prohibition leagues and temperance societies. Tbe Women’s Christian Temperance Union had also made a definite expression of opinion against the brewery. The meeting decided to maintain the pressure on the Government, and to arrange for a still wider protest from churches and interested organisations.
The soliciting of orders for New Zealand wines in the no-licence electorates of Eden and Roskill was reported at the meeting. The secretary said complaints had been received concerning the canvassers and legal opinion had been obtained. The law appeared to b.e clear that no one could canvass for liquor orders in such districts; liquor could be supplied, but only under specified conditions.
The breaches will be reported to the police and, if necessary, legal proceedings , will be begun.
