SONG AND STORY

YESTERDAY’S CLASSES AT COMPETITIONS CHOIR CLASS TONIGHT Bright and enjoyable entertainment was again provided at the Lewis Eady Hall last evening when recall items from the day session were heard. An impromptu debate and a combined ballet were also included in the programme. Yesterday's judging' was occupied mostly with vocal and elocultionary c lasses, there being only one dancing class decided, the opei'atie dance for competitors over 16. Miss Lillian O'Leary's ballet appeared in the evening. however, and provided an entertaining item with the 'Rainbow” ballet. The results of the ballet competition will be announced at the demonstration concert to be held at Mis Majesty's Theatre on Saturday. The only instrumental class held last evening was the saxophone solo, in which some pleasing work was heard. The winner, Air. E. A. Wise, of Auckland, played “Softly Awakes My Heart,” from “Samson and Delilah,” which was accorded a sympathetic interpretation. In the impromptu debate on the subject “Are the talkies a satisfactory form of amusement, and will they seriously affect the legitimate stage,” some amusing and interesting speeches were heard, the standard of the debates calling forth the commendation of the judge.
