HIS UNLUCKY DAY
A MOTORIST’S TROUBLES From Our Oxen Correspondent PALMERSTON X., Monday. “I submit that this is a case of persecution, not prosecution,” said Mr. J. Grant in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court this morning, pleading guilty, on behalf of his client. W. G. Manley, to four charges of breaches of the bylaw’s. Manley was charged with failing to sound his horn, failing to keep to the left, failing to give right of way, and with crossing the railway line when a train was approaching. From the story told by Mr. Grant it appeared that defendant had cut across a strip of grass when turning a corner. He had been accosted by a constable in plain clothes, and had been asked to .surrender his licence and to accompany the constable around to the police station. On the way around he had crossed the line when a train was coming. The outcome had been that finally he had received three informations for one incident. If it was a case of controlling, said Mr. Gram, there was no need to bring three informations for what practically amounted to the same offence.
’ I think if he is fined for coming round the corner on his wrong sido and for crossing the railway line in front of ap approaching train that should be sufficient,” said the magistrate, Mr. J. L. Stout. S.M., who imposed fines of £l, with costs 10s, on each of these two charges and convicted and discharged defendant on the other two.
