Trapped by Savage Mob
INDIAN POLICE ATTACKED Barricaded in Gambling Den HEROISM OF WHITE OFFICER (United Service} Received 9 a m. CALCUTTA, Sunday. TRAPPED in a gambling den by an infuriated mob of 200. a European police officer and a handful of Indian constables pluckily withstood repeated attacks on a house on the outskirts of Calcutta last night.
Constable Buckner, officer in charge of the raid, was twice felled by stones and received an ugly gash in the leg from a spear as he lay unconscious. A sub-officer was. seriously wounded and later taken to hospital. The den is situated in the heart of the jute mill area and a police lorry with reinforcements failed to arrive on schedule owing to a breakdown.
As a result the mob was able to pen Buckner and his party in the hut where they were bombarded with bricks and attacked through the roof with spear-pointed stakes. The position became desperate, and Buckner decided the only hope was to break through the mob. He eventually reached the road and reinforcements relieved the situation. Fifty arrests were made.
