HAUL OF LIQUOR
POLICE RAID ON THREE PREMISES “SLY-GROGGING” ALLEGED Three raids carried out by the police on Saturday evening on premises alleged to have been used for “slygiog” selling, yielded a haul of about 300 bottles of beer and a small quantity of spirits. The biggest haul was 200 bottles of liquor, removed from a house in Wellesley Street West. The house was raided by Sergeant Anniss and a party of four constables from the Central Station between 8.30 and 9 o’clock. The police made a quiet entry, all exits being watched. Only the occupier of the house was found on the premises and the liquor was found in a room on the ground floor. Operating from the Newton station, two parties of constables under Senior-Sergeant Flanagan and Sergeant Fulton respectively, carried out raids. The first party entered a room in a house in Beresford Street, by two doors. The occupier of the house and six young men were found in the room, and a large quantity of beer and stout and a bottle of whisky were removed. The party, under Sergeant Flanagan, visited a fish shop in Karangahape Road, -where several bottles of ale and stout and a bottle of gin were found In a room at the rear of the shop. The proprietor of the shop was the only occupier of the premises at the time.
