TE PAPAPA The* Te Papa pa Bowling Club held its official opening in the presence of record attendance of women and ►m sister clubs, the accommodation being taxed to the utmost. <'?lubs that were represented were Ellerslie. Dominion Road, Epsom, Carlton, Rocky Nook, Mangere, Papakura, Manurewn. Ponsonby, and St. Heliers. The Auckland Centre was represented by Messrs. J. M. Thomson, H. C. Clarke, and T. Proctor. The president of the Te Papapa Club, Mr. E. Marks, gave a brief address, and paid a tribute to the help given by the ladies of the district, and the voluntary work done by the members during the winter months. Mrs. Marks threw the first jack, and the green was declared open. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P.. and Mrs. Jordan, and Mr. E. Morton, Mayor of Onehunga. were among those present. GLEN EDEN The Glen Eden Bowling and Croquet (Tub's greens and pavilions were gaily decorated with flags and bunting, and a large number of residents and visitors were in attendance at the official opening. Representatives from various bowling and croquet clubs were also present. The Auckland Centre was represented by Messrs. S. Coldicutt apd A. C. Tonkin. Mr. Firth, president of the Glen Eden Club, in declaring the greens open, referred to the steady progress that had taken place since the formation of the club, and said they had reason to congratulate themselves on its sound position. He then called upon Mrs. Firth to throw the first jack. An adjournment was made to the croquet lawns, where Mrs. G. F. Hosking expressed pleasure in declaring the lawns open for play, and called upon Mrs. X'. S. Fox to drive the first ball. Refreshments were provided by the ladies.
Labour Day, play commencing at 9 a.m. k or the opening of the 1 croquet club, the president, Mrs. Ardern, received the visitors in a lemon and green three-piece suit. After extending a welcome, and best wishes for a pleasant season. Later in the afternoon a visit was paid to the club by a party representing the executive of the Auckland Bowling Centre. Mr. J. Thompson, on behalf of the executive extended its best wishes to Rawhiti for a successful and happy season. Mr. T. Proctor and Mr. H. Clarke also expressed seasonable wishe«. The visit which was much appreciated by the Rawhiti Club was referred to a-s a fine example of tho cordiality that exists between the centre officials and the clubs. Among the visitors present were Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., patron of the club, who-addressed the members and their friends, and Messrs. J. M. Thompson, G. H. Clarke and T. Procter. The president of the club, Mr. A. J. Coppins, in opening the club, welcomed the visitors and congratulated the greenkeeper on the beautiful state of tho greens. The representatives from the Auckland Centre conveyed greetings to the Glen Eden Club, and expressed themselves as highly pleased with the greens. Daniels, extended a hearty welcome to the members and a large and very representative gathering of visitors from other clubs. He also welcomed the members of the Croquet Club who, he said, were always prepared to assist the club in any way possible.
20. EDENDALE The Edendale Bowling Club began its 12th season at the Royal Terrace green. In welcoming the visitors. tho president. Mr. J. Mond. said the club was in a strong position. He thanked various members for their voluntary assistance in preparing the greens, which were now in first-class order. As a mark of respect to the memory of two members who had died during the winter, the assembly stood in silence. The pavilion was decorated with flags and an orchestra added to the spirit of the occasion. Mrs. Mond, wife of the president, threw the first jack. On behalf of the Auckland Bowling Centre, the president, Mr. S. Coldicutt, who was accompanied by Messrs. Tonkin and Whitten, complimented the club on the appearance of the greens, and wished members of the club a successful season. The membership now stands at 45. AVONDALE CLUB The greens, both for bowlers and croquet players, are in- excellent order, and everything is in readiness for the official opening of the Avondale Bowling Club, which is to take place on October 26. The pavilion has been repainted, and climbing roses have been planted in a number of places. DOMINION ROAD With the opening of the twenty-first season, the Dominion Road Bowling Club celebrated its coming-of-age. There were about 350 present, including members and friends. The pavilion was gaily decorated with bunting and a band contributed lively music.* In opening the season, the president, Mr. S 5. E. Chappell, congratulated the club on its continued progress and wished members an enjoyable season. Mrs. Chappell, wife of the president, rolled the first kitty, and played the first bowl. The president also referred to the fact that the Remuera Club stood in the unique position of having the largest membership in Xew Zealand and the greatest playing area in tho world. He also mentioned that the club would be holding a two-day tournament commencing on January ? in which 64 teams would be takißS part. Mrs. Daniels sent down the first bowl, being warmly applauded for tho meritorious feat of hitting the jack. The greens were then declared opened for the season.

Findlay, welcomed the visitors, and said it was hoped that the new green’s magnificent park would be officially opened shortly. He called upon Mr. D. Fergusson, the oldest member of the club present, to roll up the jack. Six new members were elected, and a gold life member’s medal was presented to Mr. Oliver Nicholson, who has held the position of president for four years, and has been patron of the club since 1907. Mr. Nicholson suitably replied, and assured the members of his continued mterest in the Mount Eden Club. TAKAPUNA In marked contrast to the conditions prevailing on the opening day last year, the official opening for the 1929-30 season of the Takapuna Bowling Club took placQ under Ideal circumstances.
In declaring the green open, the president, Mr. P. a. Coulthard, thanked the Mayor of Takapuna and the official visitors from the Auckland Bowling Centre for their kindly interest in the club. The club’s flag was flying at half-mast out of respect to the memory of one of its old members, the lato Mr. Arthur Buckley, whose funeral took place this afternoon. Another valued member, Mr. Charles Perfect, had also died during the year.
Felicitous speeches were also delivered by Mr. J. W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna and Mr. J. Hardley, representing the Auckland Bowling Centre.

WAITEMATA There was a large attendance of bowlers and visitors at official opening of the Waitemata Bowling and Croquet Club’s greens. The paviion slnd environs were decorated with bunting, and musical selections were rendered by the Birkenhead Borough Band. The lawns were in good playing condition, and the green superintendent, Mr- J. J. Browne, was complimented on their order. The president of the Waitemata Club, Mr. H. Cadness, welcomed those present. Addresses were also given by Mr. A. Harris, M.P., Mr. A. E. Greenslade, Mayor of Northcote, and Mr. J. W. Hardey, president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, who was accompanied by Messrs. G. M. Reid and K. Baiter, members of that executive. Mrs. Cadness threw the first jack and bowl over the green, which the president then declared open for play. Mrs. C. Rose, president of the croquet section of the club, subsequently drove the ball to the hoops, and Mr. Cadness declared the croquet lawn open.

OTAHUHU A large and representative gathering of bowlers attended the official opening of the Otahuhu Club on Saturday afternoon. Mr. C. P. Downey, president of the club, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, and trusted that they would spend an enjoyable afternoon. Reference was made to the good work carried out during the close season by the green superintendent and caretaker, thus providing the club with good greens right at the commencement of the season. Mrs. Downey then threw the jack and bowled ti e first bowl of the 1929-30 season. During the afternoon the green was visited by members of the Auckland Bowling Centre. THAMES Perfect weather, record attendance and greens in first-class condition, was the order at the opening of the Thames Bowling Club’s 1929-30 season on Saturday afternoon. Bowlers were present from the clubs of Te Aroha,
Waihi, Cambridge, Hikutaia, Paeroa and Kerepeehi. and the attendance of the public was the largest for many years. The president of the Thames Club, Mr. F. McCullough, welcomed the assemblage and said that Saturday’s opening was the 29th anniversary of the club. The past season was one the members were justly proud of; in fact, it was the most successful in tho history of Thames bowling. Mr. Adamson’s rink won the champion of champions shi < i at the South Auckland tournament, and they also won the championship at the Taranaki tournament, held at Hawera. At the latter tourney 100 rinks took part, and to win in such company was most creditable. At the Thames Club’s tournament Mr. VV. Smith’s rink had come out on top. Mr. McCullough said he hoped the coming season would be as successful as the last. He called upon Mrs. McCullough to throw the jack across the green, and amid cheers the season was declared open.
Afternoon tea was handed round by the members’ wives and croquet club women. The proceedings were enlivened by a number of selections by Mr. A. Williams’s orchestra.
Prior to the opening Mr. F. Adamson. who has - been green superintendent. was made a life member of the elub and presented with a badge which the president stated was a passport to any bowling club in the world. Mr. Adamson said though he was retiring from the position he would always be willing to assist the club to the best of his ability. At the Thames Bowling Club’s greens on Saturday afternoon 70 bowlers participated in the opening day’s play. The following games were played:

G. Candin, secretary, presented a flag with the club’s initials in yellow on a black background, the club’s colours. Dr. Matheson, the president, hoisted it, and thanked the donor for his gift. ROTORUA The«opening of the Rotorua Bowling Club’s season took place beforg a very large attendance of visitors and members. Games were played between rinks representing the president and the vice-president. Mr. R. A. in his opening address, said that in 1901 fifteen men met and decided to form a bowling club in Rotorua. Mr. Charles Kusabs was appointed as secretary, and he alone of the original members was still a member. In 1902 the first tournament was held, and since that time its popularity had increased each year. The next tournament would be held on October 28.
