FIRST OF HIS RACE
MAORI ARCHDEACON INSTITUTED HAMILTON CEREMONY From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Sunday. The first Maori Archdeacon, the Rev. * Hori Raiti, of Huntly, was instituted to office at St. Peter’s Cathedral today. The service was conducted by Bishop Cherrington, before a very large congregation of Maoris and Europeans. Mr. Raiti was presented by Canon J. L. A. Kayll, and was j instituted Archdeacon of Te Tai Hauauru. The Rev. K. A. Karaka, of Morrinsville, also was installed as canon of the cathedral. Bishop F. A. Bennett, who preached the sermon, described the occasion as. a unique one. He ottered his sincere and hearty congratulations to Bishop Cherrington for the confidence he had shown in the Maori clergy and for the courage he had displayed in elevating a member of the Maori race to the important and responsible office of archdeacon. His action, he said, would give tremendous encouragement to the Maoris everywhere.
