HAMILTON NEWS

The new swimming pool at the Matangi school was officially opened by the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. Atmore, on Saturday. There was a large attendance of residents. The pool, which is 70ft long and 25ft wide, is supplied with water from an artesian bore only 12ft deep, and it fills in seven hours. The walls and bottom are constructed of concrete and the upper walls of galvanised iron. The total cost was approximately £ 400, half of this amount being raised locally by contributions and a gymkhana. Mr. W. Trounson, chairman of the School Committee, thanked Mr. R. G. Howell, assistant-engineer to the Waikato County Council, who had supervised the construction of the baths. The Minister expressed appreciation of the work of the school committee, and Mr. W. Lee Martin, M.P. for Raglan. and Mr. F. Lye, M.P. for Waikato, made remarks in similar vein. The committee appointed at a meeting of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, to consider reimbursing the guarantors of the New Zealand Co-operative Bacon and Packing Company for the losses suffered under their guarantee, has issued an appeal to farmers. It has been decided to ask the conveners of butter and cheese committees to undertake a canvass of all settlers in their districts. It has been decided to call the fund the Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Debt of Honour Reimbursement Fund.

A party of officers of the Waikato Infantry Regiment visited Orakau. near Te Awamutu, yesterday. Owing to old age and illness the two surviving Maoris who took part in the battle of Orakau. in 1864. could not be present, but Major H. H. A. Westmacott accompanied the visitors over the scene of the fight and pointed out features in connection with Rewi Maniapoto’s famous stand against the British forces.
