ELSIE WALKER CASE
CHANGE IN LEGISLATION URGED PRIVATE MEMBER’S BILL THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Fri. An attempt to bring in legislation that will enable a coronial inquest to he reopened is being made by Mr. C. E. Macmillan (Tauranga), who raised the point in the House a few days ago, only to be informed that there was no power under the present Act. Mr. Macmillan is now seeking to introduce a Coroner's Amendement Bill. The Elsie Walker inquest and the attempts that are being made to have it reopened have aroused much interest in the country, but, as explained by the Minister of Justice (the Hon. T. M. Wilford), there is no power under the New Zealand law to do anything, although there is power under the English Act.
