GUNMAN GIVES IN

: CHICAGO TERROR'S TAME SURRENDER | SQUADS OF MARKSMEN OUT The hair-raising reputation of “Baby Face” Doody, gunman, mail robber, and the terror of the Cnicago “bad lands,” fades into the merest shadow as he rests in a prison cell after one of the most ignominious surrenders in the history of American crime, says the New York correspondent of “The Daily Mail.” “Baby Face” had so often talked of how, should the need arise, he would shoot his way to freedom, that four squads of specially selected police marksmen were detailed for bis arrest. Men armed with shotguns guarded the exits from the house in which Doody was located, but these precautions proved unnecessary. The notorious criminal made no move when the detectives entered his room, although his pockets were full of cartridges, a revolver reposed in his holster, and two more were found lying ready to hand. Doody surrendei'ed without a murmur. and even sought to justify tlie killing of a postal inspector named Jackson, with which he is charged, by saying, “I thought he was some hoodlum trying to pull a stick-up.” Meanwhile another raid, yielding a larger quarry, was carried out in East Chicago, Indiana, during a clean-up by Prohibition authorities. More than 100 arrests were made, among them that of Mr. Raleigh Hale, the Mayor of East Chicago, his chief of police, Mr. James Regan, and a prominent lawyer, all of whom next day secured bail at £SOO each. The charge against the Mayor and tlie chief of police is that they conspired to permit violations of the liquor laws.
