Prodice Has a Chance In New Zealand Cup
TO RACE AT CAMBRIDGE IS TWO MILES TOO FAR? | When Prodice was withdrawn from j the Mitchelson Cup on the occasion of I the Auckland Racing Club s recent meeting it was generally acknowledged that the Te Awamutu representative was being reserved for the New Zealand Cup, a contention that is borne out in the fact that providing nothing comes against her during the interim the daughter of Catmint is sure to be on hand to contest the Riccarton two miles. Xo rider has yet been announced for Prodice, but as it is no good havingundeniable prospects without the services of a lirst-class horseman overtures have been made to L., J. Ellis, who is at present following his calling in Australia. Whether young Ellis has accepted a mount in this particular
event is not definitely known, but it seems certain that if he is not retained he will take the ride. Final Trial In Public Prodice has pleased Trainer P. E. Loomb with the progress made, and she promises to strip as lit as anything in the race, notwithstanding that she will have had only two races prior to taking on the big Riccarton race; whereas several of her opponents are reaching the end of their itinerary, covering a period of several months. ►Since returning home from Auckland —she was brought to Ellerslie but not raced —Prodice has been hitting out with plenty of freedom, and the dash she infuses into her work is a fair criterion of how she is progressing. Sound work over a distance is the exercise required from her, but with an engagement in the Members’ Memorial Handicap at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Labour Lay, her trainer will now see what she can do in the matter of time-making. There is no penalty attachable to a win in the Cambridge race, and with all to gain and nothing to lose, this race will be Prodice’s last prior to her effort at Christchurch. Incidentally, the stable’s other representative, Desert Glow, is off colour, and will not start on Labour Day. Whether Prodice will see out a strongly-run two miles has formed the subject of much discussion, but she shaped creditably up to a mile and three-quarters last season, and the extra quarter of a mile may not prove 1 to be a hindrance.
THE Ohinemuri Jockey Club has received permission from the Minister of Internal Affairs to hold a race meeting at Paeroa in May, next year. The net profits will be donated to the Earthquake Relief Fund. The club has suggested May 24 as the most suitable date.
