BOMBAY-KARAKA DISTRICT From Our Own Correspondent DRURY, Friday. The annual meeting of the Opaheke, Bombay-Karaka Ratepayers’ Association held at Drury last evening was well attended. Mr. R. Asmiger presided. Also present were: Mr. T. J. Lockwood, member for Hunua Riding of tho Franklin County Council; Mr. J. B. McKinney, Franklin ElectricPower Board: Messrs. A. Willis (president), G. F. McDonald (secretary) and executive members of the Papakura Chamber of Commerce; Messrs. W. J. Brooks (president) and L. Peglar (secretary) of the Drury Progressive League; Mr. A. V. Patterson (secretary). of the Hunua Ratepayers’ Association. The report stated that it was regretted that nothing had been done in the way of permanent construction on the Great South Road in the Franklin County since the last annual meeting. However, it was limped that the work would be commenced in the near future. Plans and estimates were now being considered by the Highways Board. The association had urged that highways be nationalised, protested against the inequitable method of levying the hospital rate and any reduction in heavy traffic licence fees. The balance sheet revealed a credit of £7 15s 7d on the year’s working. Officers elected were;—President, Air. R. Armiger; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. H. Waterhouse, G. Ingram and Commander D. A. Bingley; secretary, Mr. V. C. Cooper; auditor, Mr. J. N. Maxwell; executive, Messrs. F. Parker, Archibald (Opaheke), W. J. Brooks, M. U. Orum, W. Brooks (Drury), L. F. Leitch, J. Jarvie, R. J. Johnston (Runicman), J. B. McKinney, W. J. Rutherford, A. Brown (Bombay), W. J. D. Sharp, A. Maitland, D. Ingram (Ramarama), S. Dufty and D. F. Lundon (Tuhimata). The appointment of Karaka representatives was referred to the executive. Mr. Lockwood addressed the meeting on the subject of subsidies on rates.
