TRADE IN PRODUCE POTATO MARKET EASIER ONLY SMALL STOCKS HELD Sun Office, 9 a.m. Apart from the fact that there is a steady retail demand for most lines, there is little to report in grain, seed and produce circles. Merchants are mostly buying from hand to mouth, and letting the future lock to itself meantime. The end-of-the-season decline dn the potato market came sooner than most merchants expected, but there have been practically no heavy losses, as no Auckland merchant has held big stocks over the past two or three weeks. The position at the moment is that most merchants are carrying just sufficient stocks for immediate requirements and practically all buying is being done on an ex the ship basis. The Waipiata tomorrow and the Waipahi on Monday will bring sufficient tubers between them to carry this market on for another week or ten days, by which time the Wingatui should be here with the last worthwhile shipment this season.

Already the new season’s crop is coming into the marts in quantities sufficient to supply a big percentage of the luxury trade. Within three -weeks the new crop should be sufficiently well forward to make Southern tubers superfluous. At the moment, best Southern tables aro selling through store at from £ll to £ll 10s. There is little to report in regard to onions. Merchants still carry stocks sufficient for immediate requirements, the comparatively high prices ruling tending to a certain extent to limit the retail demand. Through store prices are unchanged at from 18s 6d to 20s a crate, and 17s 6d to 19s a bag, according to the size of the parcel. Chaff Market Very Firm Chaff is a commodity which is giving merchants considerable concern at the moment. Supplies are very hard to obtain in the South, in spite of a slight increase in price. The price through store, Auckland, is very firm at from £lO 10s to £ll a ton. A fresh shipment is due from Tasmania in about ten days’ time, and this should help to relieve the position somewhat. The oat market is steady and prices aro unaltered, with B Gartons selling through Auckland stores at 4s 9d a bushel. Wheat is stationary, with the market showing a firmer tendency for future months. At. the moment, merchants ask 7s 9d a bushel through store, Auckland. Although there is a steady retail demand for maize, there is little life in the wholesale trade, especially in the direction of Gisborne. All South Auckland business is being done ex Bay of Plenty stations, where the price is still nominally 5s 3d a bushel. This price is being broken for sizeable parcels, however.

Ample supplies of pollard are held on tho spot, and the price through merchants’ stores ranges around 10s 9d a cwt; bran is still scarce, but merchants are able to supply limited orders at around 9s 3d a bushel. Produce Boat Movements The Waipiata, from Dunedin, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington and Picton, left the latter port yesterday for Auckland, where she is due tomorrow. The Wingatui loaded at Oamaru on Wednesday and leaves Dunedin today, A*ia Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington, for Auckland. She is due here toward the end of next week. The Waipahi leaves Lyttelton today for Auckland direct and is due here on Monday next. After discharge the vessel leaves on Tuesday for Apia (Samoa) to load fruit for this port. The Kurow is to load at the Bluff about Wednesday next, thence Dunedin, Timaru. Lyttelton and Wellington. for Auckland. Tho Kaikorai. from Edithburg and Wallaroo, leaves Adelaide today and Melbourne on Tuesday for Auckland direct. The Kaitangata is loading at Devonport (Tasmania) today for Auckland. The Waihemo, from Pacific Slope ports, Is due at Auckland on Tuesday. The Golden West, from Los Angeles, is due at Auckland on Monday week. Tho Aorangi, with fruit and produce, left Vancouver at 2 p.m. on Wednesday for Auckland, and is due here on November 3.

MARKETING CULL COWS

WAIKATO SCHEME A scheme to market all the cull cows of the Waikato on a cooperative basis has been launched by the Waikato and Thames Valley Co-operative Calf By-product Association, Ltd. The association has called a meeting to be held at Hamilton next week, where the proposition will be put before farmers in detail. Briefly, the proposition aims to do away with, the dealer, and to aim also at having tho cull dairy cow slaughtered for its meat, hide, and byproducts value, rather than allow it to be sold back to the dairyman for inclusion in the herd. Payment will be made on the same basis as that in operation in other farmers* co-operative concerns —an advance at the time of delivery, and a final clcan-up payment when the sales are completed on the overseas market.

WORKERS SHARE PROFITS MEETING OF STAFF An interesting function took place on Wednesday evening, when Messrs. L. D. Nathan and Co., Ltd., called the staff together for the 12th annual declaration of trading results and of the i amount distributable among employees or transferable to their superannuation I fund. Th© chairman, Mr. N. Alfred Nathan, congratulated those present upon the existence of a divisible balance, notwithstanding tho handicap of increasing competition.
