MR. BRUCE DEFEATED
LABOUR WINS FLINDERS SEAT PARTY’S BIG MAJORITY (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Thursday. Although the results will not be announced until tomorrow, it is known that the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Bruce, has been definitely defeated by his Labour opponent, Mr. E. J. Holloway, for the Flinders seat. The Labour Party now holds 43 seats, and should gain three more before the end of the week, leaving it with a clear majority of more than 20, apart from the Independents, who may numbep five.
It is understood that Mr. Bruce contemplates spending a holiday in New Zealand as soon as the resignation of his Ministry and other office details have been completed. COALMINE DEADLOCK NO SOLUTION EXPECTED FROM MR. THEODORE Reed. 10 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. It is not anticipated that any solution of the coal problem will be found as a result of the conversations among Mr. E. G. Theodore, DeputyLeader o£ the Labour Party, the coalowners, and officials of the Miners’ Federation.
Mr. Theodore’s proposals are practically a renewal of those made on different occasions during the past seven months by the miners—namely, reopening of the mines on the conditions existing before they closed down. There is not the least likelihood of the owners agreeing to this.
