OPERETTA PRESENTED AT OTAHUHU
SUNDAY SCHOOL FUNDS WILL BENEFIT The funds of the Holy Trinity Sunday School, Otahuliu, will benefit as the result of a successful presentation of the original operetta, “The Girl from China.” The members of the senior branch of the Ellerslie Girls* Friendly Society were responsible for the production. The cast of characters was as follows: —Dick Pengarth, Miss Beryl Poulton; Jack Vaughan (his friend and owner of the yacht Skylark), Miss Leila Morgan; Dick’s sisters—Angela, Miss Else Meredith; Maud, Miss Betty Cooper; Polly Perkins, Miss Mavis Thomas; Simon Simple, Miss Katherine Pounsett; Yulee, Miss Eva Stares; Wing Sung, Miss Jessie Mcßride; Hi Ku Shu, Miss Ethel Schmitt. Probably the best item of the evening was Miss Poulton in the solo, “Tis the End, Farewell,” for which she was recalled twice. The duet, “My Little China Girl,” by Dick and Yulee. was also well received. The scarf ballet also evoked applause, as did the Chinese “Dance Grotesque.” Misses Mary Stewart and Gladys Keesing were also applauded for their pierrot dance. The scenery and lighting effects were in the hands of Messrs. Arthur Prentice, Hugh Cooper and Frank Skeritt. Dances, Misses Beryl Poulton and Eva Stares; piano, Miss Connie Christmas; violin, Frey Jury; cello, Mr. Oswald Bree. At the conclusion of the production Mr. J. C. F. Paine apologised for the absence of the Rev. C. B. W. Seton, and on behalf of the teachers thanked the performers for their efforts. AN ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Doris May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Whitson, of Norana Avenue, Remuera, to Nigel Ernest, younger son of Mrs. Williams and the late Dr. W. E. Williams, of “Ulverston,” Remuera Road.
