BIG RACE AT MASTERTON
Seven Riccarton Candidates In
TUIE one-day meeting tomorrow of the .Matterton Ivacine Club is the only racing attraction scheduled, but more than passing interest will be evinced in the Caulfield fixture with its Cup race, in which four New Zealand horses figure. “Early Bird's” review of the Masterton programme is giver below.
In days gone by the Masterton spring meeting' was a good trying-out fixture for New Zealand Cup candidates. and although not so popular with owners of stayers, it is just possible that tomorrow's one-day affair
will throw some light on the big Kiccarton race. Excellent fields have been paid up for tomorrow, and the sport should be of the best, especially with the Wellington meeting opening a week later. Incidentally, it is to be noted that winners of open races tomorrow are not subject to any penalty for Trentham, but hack winners will have to put up 51b extra in their races at W ellington. A start is to be made with the Nursery Handicap A few of these have raced, with Princess Betty the only winner to date. She is smart, too. Tenterden is spoken of highly, and Sporting Chance, Recant, Arapean and the Nimble- Gesture bracket are possessed of plenty of pace. Sporting Chance is said to bo pretty good, but most likely the favourites will be: — PRINCESS BETTY NIMBLE-GESTURE Bracket. Maiden btanes With a big field of 25 this event is going to take somo picking, but it lias to be remembered that the fine big straight on this course makes the proposition not nearly so hopeful for owners of the good ones. A pair who will appreciate the long run in and will therefore be heavily supported are ROUNDELAY PAT’S BOY High-Weight Handicap This event has filled really well, with its field of a dozen. Black Mint would appreciate a bit of rain, but Vesperus is said to be nearly at his best, which is good. Billion is a useful sort, and Masher has won twice recently. Tourist, Austerity (who shapes like a stayer), Calluna and Otaura Lass are also likely to be in the limelight. Backers may express a preference for AUSTERITY (or if absent) TOURIST VESPERUS Lansdowne Handicap Tho top weight, Imx Bono, ran a good race into fourth place in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas recently, and that form reads pretty well for this class. Waterspear, Gold Bag, High Society. St. Melba, the Napier winner
Clarendon, Fcrndon (who showed a lot of pace when raced round the Auckland circuit), Royal Opera, King Acre, Arrowhead, Acredity, and Pari read the best. It is a trappy sort of race, with probably the following the best backed: FERNDEN (or if absent) ROYAL OPERA C LARENDON
Masterton Cup 'There are some good ones engaged in the big event, for out of the ten acceptors no less than seven are in the Now Zealand Cup. these being star Area, Piuthair, Spearmiss, Rabbi, Royal Game, Courageous and Tcheka. Star Area has been doing good track work and should be nearly ready. Piuthair can be fancied on Auckland running, but Tresham docs not appeal in this class. Spearmiss is a good stayer, and as she is such a good finisher she will have to bo considered. Rabbi will have that good light-weight. K. Voitre, in the saddle, and Royal Game, on Southern form, could not be greatly fancied. Courageous, like Spearmiss, is a brilliant stayer, and he will be fancied. liouex is too iffy, and Tcheka and Ramoses are reported to be on the up grade, which they would need to be to have a show here. It will provide an interesting race, with a keen tussle for favouritism between: COURAGEOUS PIUTHAIR Lawn Handicap The mile hack event has filled well, but "no or two of those sun fancied claim earlier engagements. However, best-backed may be: MASHER (or if absent) SHORTLY AUSTEIIIT V Grandstand Handicap Tho keenest interest will be taken in Commendation's effort to repeat his last year’s performance in this race, when lie had 101 b more and won. He is working well, too. Panther is a possibility, and Keddar is said to be returning to his early winter form. Atholspear may want a longer journey, but First Money is a promising three-year-old. Moutoa Treasury is not a good beginner, but the seven furlongs, together with the long straight, will bo a lot in her favour. She was third at Marton last month to Eaglet and Blimp, and that was good form. Miss Ransom may not be ready, Rumcses is in the Cup (but would be preferred here). Ex Bono has an earlier race, and Full Mark won two races at
Marton like a champion hack should. Perhaps Awapuni centre will supply tho favourites in: COMMENDATION MOUTOA TREASURY’ Electric Handicap There are some speedy ones engaged here, such as Banket, Hunting Boy, Fernden, Clarendon, Australis, Shot Si£k, Ben Hur and Royal Mission, ensuring a fast dash for early positions. Those that make most appeal are: FERNDEN (or if absent) HUNTING BOY BANKET The following are some of the Riding Engagements H. Wiggins.—Autopay, Bainty Ways, Tcheka, Balloon, Veronese and General Gas. T. Metcalf.—Rameses, Grattan and Arapean. H. Goldfinch.—Royal Opera and First Muncy. T. Green.—Piuthair and Keddar. B. H. Morris. —King Acre, Star Area, Intruder and Banket. K. Voitre.—Sporting Chance, Moutoa Treasury, Rabbi, Rioghail, Royal Mission, Spearform and Potoaform. W. S. Taylor.—Grand Chaco. J. Barry.—Black Mint and Royal Game. W. Broughton.—Nimble and Pari. A. McDonald.—Calluna and Warzone. A. G. Murray.—Commendation, Roundelay and Bisrank. R. J. Mackie.—Robbie’s Mistake, W aterspear and Clarendon. C. W. France.—Adventus. W. Brown.—Arrowhead. A. E. Ellis.— Masher. G. Salt.—Black Mint. N. Trillo.—Modern. J. Cammick.—lmateagirl and Make Up.
