Paquito Backed For Caulfield Cup
BIG RACE TOMORROW THE DOMINION'S FOUR j i The Caulfield meeting concludes toI morrow, and the V»R.C. fixture at Flemington opens a fortnight later. November 2, with the Melbourne Cup run on the following Tuesday, November 5. The big race scheduled for tomorrow is the Caulfield Cup, in which four New Zealand-bred horses are engaged, viz., Paquito, Catkin, Affirm and Perception. Catkin was the early favourite for the race, but he has receded in the market. Now Paquito, Me* Carten’s mount, would appear to be the Dominion's big hope. It is interesting to note that Taisho and Prince Viol, the two at the bottom of the Caulfield Cup, both won on the same course last Wednesday, the latter three-year-old winning the weight-for-age event. Both these may be hard to beat. The following is the list of acceptors for the big race:— CAULFIELD CUP Of £ 6,300 and gold cup of tlie value of i-150; li miles, st. lb. Perception
In the draw for positions at the barrier Paquito is eighth out from the rails, Catkin is on the rails, and High Syce is seventeenth. Alfred the Great has been scratched for the race. At Mentone yesterday High Syce (W. Duncan) galloped seven f.urlongs on the grass in 1.28, which was a good final trial, comments a Melbourne message. . . Backing for Dominion Horse
The Sydney “Sun” of Friday last has the following alient the market movements for the Caulfield Cup, before the final acceptance fell due last Monday: Sensational backing of Paquito for the Caulfield Cup has resulted in the New Zealander firming to second favouritism. He has been supported both straight-out and in doubles for thousands of pounds, and his price lias shortened 10 points. It is now definite that Paquito will go to Melbourne. The commission was worked late yesterday afternoon, and at noon today Pa.quito’s owner, Mr. 11. A. Ivnight, after an interview with the trainer (F. D. Jones), said: “Paquito is going to Melbourne, tie will not race at Randwick on Saturday, and will leave for the south as early as possible.” When the fact of the heavy support for his horse was mentioned, Mr. Knight simply shrugged liis shoulders and said: “If he’s good enough he’ll win.”
Paquito’.s third in the A.J.C. Metropolitan indicated that lie had a firstclass chance in the Caulfield Cup, and ante-post bookmakers welcomed the possibility of his contesting the latter race. High Syce is supposed by many people to have a mortgage on it. and the bookmakers have very heavy liabilities against the former Queensland horse, but the introduction of Paquito into the market leases the ringmen in a happier position. Hot Favourites Paquito has been backed in practically every State of the Commonwealth, and has been supported heavily in doubles with Nightmarch and Phar Lap for the Melbourne Cup. High Syce is still a strong favourite for the Caulfield Cup. three and a-half points in advance of Paquito. This pair dominate flic discussions. In the words of one leading Melbourne ringman, “Paquito was backed off the card, and we are heavily involved about High Syce. Nothing else is asked for, either straight-out or as first legs of doubles.’-’ Phar Lap is a hot favourite for the Melbourne Cup, and is followed four and a-half points away by Nightmarch and Winalot. The last-mentioned has firmed. Crucis, following his Randwick failure on Wednesday, eased several points.
