R. W. LANDER’S RETIREMENT FROM HURDLE RACING

IT is stated that Roger Lander, one of the most expert hurdlers in the Dominion and six times

national champion, has announced his intention of retiring. It is u n der stood that he has intimated that he does not intend to defend his title this year. He first won a New Zealand c h ampionship

in the 1922-23 season, and since then he has successfully staved off ill! challenges in that particular branch of sport. He has won Otago and Wellington titles, and has been the representative of both provinces at the New Zealand championships on different occasions. He won the 120yds hurdles championship at the last Australasian meeting, this being his most important victory. He also holds the Australasian record (co-equal) of 15 l-ssec, established at the Auckland Domain in 1927. Like Kalaugher and other fine athletes, Lander is an old boy of the Sacred Heart College, Auckland.
