TAXIS AND RAPPERS

NO REFLECTION CAST ON COMPANY COUNCILLOR’S ASSURANCE No reflection on the drivers of the Checker Taxi Company was intended in the Mount Albert Borough Council discussion on taxis and flappers. A statement to this effect was mado today by Cr. H. L. Kayes, chairman of the council s works and lighting committee. “I have interviewed Mr. A. E. Parker, superintendent of the Checker Company. on his views regarding the application of his company for a taxi stand in Salisbury Road,” Mr. Kayes said. “I feel satisfied that it is in the interests not only of the company, but of the ratepayers, to have this stand allocated to the company. Mount Albert and outlying suburbs can be served. “The statements appearing in the Press were somewhat misleading, but, after a long interview with the superintendent, he is satisfied that no reflection on the drivers of his service was intended. It was the first big company of taxis established in Auckland. and I am satisfied that the company would not entertain the employment of a driver whose character was not beyond reproach.

"In consideration of the fact that there is such a number of drivers lu Auckland, and that taxi competition is so keen, I am certain, although there may be one or two drivers of questionable character, that we can be proud of them as a body.”
