“JUST LIKE BEER”
NO FLOWERS SOLD AFTER SIX FRUITERERS PROSECUTED “Flowers are like beer in this respect,” observed Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, referring to a recently gazetted regulation prohibiting fruiterers from selling flowers after six o’clock in the evening. Prosecutions were brought by the Inspector of Factories against 14 fruiterers, Mr. Munro appearing for twelve of them. “This regulation prohibiting the selling of fresh-cut flowers by fruiterers after six o’clock is the result of a petition by a majority of the florists,” said counsel. “The defendants knew nothing of the regulation, and say that no step was taken by the authorities or the florists to warn them of it.” Ah Chee (two charges), F. Bolton, C. Panchie, A. Chambers, Ethel O. Dick, Hop Chong and Co., G. H. Pearce, Patel and Co., Quing Kee and Co., J. C. Wilson, F. E. Willoughly, and Wall Jang Bros., were convicted and discharged. Joe Chong, who was said to have been caught by an inspector after being once warned, was fined 10s and costs.
