The question of the Prisons Departj ment competing with private enterprise was brought up by Mr. H. T. Armstrong (Christchurch East). He asked the Minister of Justice, the Hon. T. M. Wilford, if he were aware | (1) that the Paparua prison was tendering for and securing contracts for j the supply of shingle jrroduced by prison labokr; (2) that in many cases the price a yard was little more than half the amount at which outsiders could sell- where award wages were paid; (3) that many ffien who had been employed in shingle pits for some time were being discharged because of contracts having been secured by the Prisons Department. If the statements were correct would the Minister take steps to prevent such unfair competition? The Minister replied that he was in communication with the Christchurch shingle pit proprietors on the subject, and until he received more information could not discuss the question j with the Controller-General of j Prisons. ~
