RUGBY TO LEAGUE
HEADMASTER DENIES PUNISHMENT REPLY TO COMPLAINTS An allegation that boys at Hikurangi School had been punished for playing Rugby League was denied by Mr. H. Moore-Jones. headmaster at the school, in a letter to the Auckland Education Board. At a previous meeting of the board. Mr. W. J. Ham mill, chairman of the Auckland Rugby League, submitted to the board complaints from the boys i concerned regarding the “attitude” ; brought about by their playing the j League game. ‘‘The school football taught at the - Hikurangi School is that played under the rules of the New Zealand Rugby Union,” Mr. Moore-Jones wrote in re- j ply to the board’s request for a state- ! ment of the position. “With three exceptions, there has j been no desire on the part of boys. 1 parents’ committee or teachers, to change the established order obtaining in school football. Any such agitation has emanated from a source uninterested in the welfare of the school. No punishment is meted out to these boys. Having decided to play ‘League/ they knowingly lose the benefit of the coaching given to the boys under the rules of the New Zealand Rugby Union. “Upon their own request, expressed to their school clubmates, these boys mentioned have since been reinstated by the school Rugby club. There now exists nothing to mar the harI mony of the school.” , The board decided to send the | headmaster’s information to Mr. I Hammill.
