Extract from an article on “The I Growth of Auckland”: . . . The city note presents a m» changed skyline to that which shotted |up some years ago. This is mainly j due to the number of infectious diseases hospital blocks which the Hospital Board has built since its serious financial surplus. The writer was amazed recently to discover a small building section that the Hospital Board had evidently overlooked. It was sandwiched between tico wings of ' an Isolation Block, a genuine old relic of the past. The, Hospital Board's new infectious diseases an nr.' I which is to cover the whole of North Shore and TaJcapuna, and is now in process of completion, will be a stately addition to the list. Extract from “Stop-Press News."—* INCREASE IN TRAM FARES Oil the recommendation of Mr. Allum the Transport Board today* decided to make a general increase in the fares paid to passengers in the trams and buses. Mr. Allum said that he did not think that the passengers were receiving enough in compensation ! for their trouble and discomfort. Extract from the Parliamentary notes:— MEMBERS’ SALARIES REDUCTION URGED BANKS COMPLAINING (By Telegraph. — Special Reporter) WELLINGTON, Today. An immediate and drastic reduction in members’ salaries was urged by Mr. O. Twaddle (Waikikamookau) in an urgent question addressed to the Prime Minister and the House today in connection with the vital problem of the huge Treasury surplus.
Mr. O. Twaddle said that tho position was desperate as each mein* ber had to hire a lorry every pay day to take his salary to the bank and the banks were beginning to talk in a nasty fashion about overcrowding and charging an extra storage fee. In addition, the members found it quit® impossible to count their salaries, and were consequently in fear of being cheated. He used the word “cheated' in a Parliamentary or jocular sens£ The Prime Minister replied that tht members had the benefit of the hard* ship clause for appeal, and he refused to be rushed into anythingintended, however, to have the whole surplus ‘tusied into the harbour short!?: he would rai*9 ( another loan on the London market.
