OLD MAN KILLED
HURLED OFF BRIDGE BY TRAIN THROWN INTO SEA Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A fatal accident occurred this evening when Mr. John T. Meek, an oldage pensioner, was killed while crossing the Paremata railway bridge. The accident took place shortly before 6.30 p.m. Mr. Meek, who for the past week had been staying at Paremata, was returning to his lodgings carrying a bag of shellfish. He stepped aside to allow the down passenger train to pass, but was struck by the step of the engine and hurled into the sea below. As soon as the train reached Paremata station a boat was hastily dispatched to recover the body and a doctor was summoned. When the body was brought ashore it was found that there was a deep gash across the right temple. Mr. Meek, who was 85 years of age, was born in Australia, but had spent most of his life in New Zealand. He is survived by a widow, three sons and two daughters.
