KING COUNTRY NEWS
The question of holidays for nurses was again discussed at" the monthly meeting of the Taumarunui Hospital Board, Mr. Geo. Denison raising the matter and contending that the nurses were deserving of better treatment, and should have a day’s holiday each week. The board’s house committee is to go fully into the position, and if possible arrange for each nurse to have four days’ holiday every month. The Director-General of Healtli has approved of the appointment of Mr. A. S. Laird as the board’s architect. The managing secretary, Mr. 12. Calderwood, reported that the arrangement with the Tongariro Hostel in connection with laundry work was not working satisfactorily, the amount of work promised not being forhcoming, with the result that little or no profit was being made by the board. It was resolved that the contract be terminated at the end of one month. The Taumarunui County Council at its monthly meeting considered a request from the Ongarue Domain Board for assistance in liquidating its liabilities incurred in putting the domain lands in order. The council resolved that it could not establish a precedent in this direction, and the request was declined. The Mananui Town Board's request to the Public Works engineer in regard to protective works against flooding of the Wanganui River is receiving the attention of the head olfice, and the board anticipates definite action on this important matter within a short time. The annoyance from railway engine smoke has long been a burden with Taumarunui shopkeepers, and at the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce it was decided to make a further effort to have the Government utilise unemployed labour in the promised work of removing the enginesheds to a site at Matapuna. Plans for this development have been prepared for a long time, and in view of persistent rumours that the present sheds are to be enlarged it is hoped that the department might be prevailed upon to remove the cause of the trouble. The department owns a considerable area of land in the Matapuna suburb, the site of the future new sheds.
