FATHERLY COUNCIL

mt. albert watches 9VER THE FLAPPERS LIGHTING TAXI STANDS The danger to young girls was one of the reasons advanced by councillors last evening at a meeting of the Mount Albert Borough' Council against having taximen parked in dfe—k places. rpHE issue -wan y»Tsn<! by an appli- | cation of the flieeker Taxi-cab ; Company for permission to transfer ! the present stand at Kingsland to a i position in Salisbury Road, near the main road. The Red star Taxi Service also wanted authority to erect telephone cabinets at specified points. The first application was strongly opposed by Councillor A. A. Buckley. "He don t ttant to have taxi—stands in dark places; we want them where there is plenty of light," he declared. “Otherwise, you will be having these young flappers hanging round the stand, and goodness knows what will happen. It’s no use shutting our eyes to the matter; it goes on all the time.” I “It is fn the interests of the young ! folk that the taxi-stands should be in j a well-lighted area,” declared Councillor Kayes. He claimed it was no ‘ use having taxis “standing there in the i darkness.’* The Mayor, Mr. L. K. Rhodes, con- ! sidered it was a great advantage to ! have the taxi-stands in the borough. : ■ [ have heard no suggestions, such as j Councillor Buckley lias made." lie pro- I . ceded, “but if there is any complaint i made we could cancel the stand at once, t [ don't think meantime, we should i blacken the position until we have evi- ! dence,” he added. -You can't rely on anything what- ; ever,’* declared Councillor J. H. Langley. “Wherever there is a taxi-stand you will find flappers hanging round for a joyride.’* One member declared that the taximen could not always be taking girls for joyrides, as they had to account to the company for their time. “The Checker Company is not a company now,” interjected Councillor Kayes. After having some experience going round with the borough traffic inspector he believed it to be in the interests of the borough to have the taxi-stands in well-lighted areas and not in the darkness. A motion by Councillor Buckley to i the effect that the Checker Company | be allowed to use the Kingsland stand, but that the council was unable to see j its way to permit a stand on the suggested site, lapsed. Then came an amendment from j; Councillor Kayes recommending that j . the company be allowed to have a | j phone-box only in Salisbury Road, but I ] no stand, was defeated, and ultimately’ j ] the council decided its joint committee ] should inspect the Salisbury Road site, I i and also the locations of the phono I i f-abinets asked for by the Red Star ! t Company and report. j j
