VARSITY ROWING
AUCKLAND CLUB’S REPORT A steady advance in Varsity rowing: is recorded in tlie report of the Auckland University College Rowing Club, which will be presented at the annual meeting on October 21. The outstanding feature of the year was the formation of rowing clubs at Canterbury University College and Otago University respectively. Xow that rowing has gained a footing in each of the four colleges it is hoped that healthy rivalry will accelerate the growth of the separate clubs. Tho second annual eight-oar race was held at Lyttelton. The race was keenly contested for the most part, though a mishap within the last halfmile eliminated the Auckland crew from serious competition at the finish. Victoria College is congratulated, on its meritorious victory. A conference of delegates was also held at Christchurch, resulting in the foundation of a New Zealand University flowing Council to control the sport in the University. Tho report also states: —The club's inability to levy on its members offers a very serious dillicuity peculiar to university rowing clubs in New Zealand alone. It also' retards the achievement of the club's ambition to have its own racing eight and ors together with a shed to house them. The executive has opened a subscription list as a nucleus of a boat fund and enlists the whole-hearted support of all members in encouraging a generous response. It cannot bo emphasised too strongly what handicap the club will face if compelled by the enterprise of its Southern rivals to race in the heavier practice boats.
