HAURAKI PLAINS NOTES
The taking of a poll of ratepayers of the Mangatarata district for the metalling of the roads in their locality, which will mean a special rate of 3fid in the £, was a request granted by the Hauraki Plains County Council on Thurs- * dav. The metalling of these roads will provide an all-weather route from the ( Morrinsville district to Auckland * shorter than any other. « « • Up to the present, permission to erect a public abattoir for Hauraki Plains ' has not been received by the Hauraki ~ Plains Meat Co., Ltd. Messrs. J. W. McLarin, G. H. Rob- j , inson, H. F. Louch and A. Price waited t upon the Hauraki Plains County Coun- , cil with a request that it use their ] land free for a stock route from Ngatea } to Iverepeehi along the Piako River j s stopbank. They would fence it and ] very little formation would be re- . quired. The council decided to obtain the views of the Hauraki United j Drainage Board as to utilising the , stopbank. ] The metalling of the streets in Here- - peehi township is to be the subject of i a loan poll of ratepayers. Advice has : been received that a subsidy of £2 for , £1 on £1,426 would be placed on the , next Public Works estimate for metal- 1 i ling Kaikahu Road, Rimu Street, Matui Street, Miro Street, and Rata Street, a , total of 92i chains. * * * Settlers of Huirau Point, Turua, who . have been agitating for some time to have the Waihou River stopbank continued northward to connect with the Hauraki United Drainage Board’s bank so that flooding of their land will be prevented when floods in the river meet high spring-tides, have been advised by the Minister of Public Works that a gang of 100 unemployed men will be sent to the district in the very near future to construct the bank by hand labour. A deviation to cut out the notorious j | “glue-pot” bend on the Waitakaruru- j | Morrinsville Road has been estimated ; I by the Lands Drainage Department to j ! cost £950 more than the estimated cost j of improving the existing road, so was unwarranted. * Notification was received from the j Public Works Department by the J Hauraki Plains County Council that a grant of £433 at the rate of £2 for, £ 1 had been made available for the i renewal of the Mahuta Road bridge, j The engineer has forwarded plans and , specifications for approval. * * * The county engineer, Mr. F. Basham, I stated that all the roads in the county were in very fair order. Most of the ! highway -had been given a dressing of chips. The unmetalled roads were being graded. The metalling of Pouarua Road would commence next week if weather permitted. The haunching of the Ngatea-Waitakaruru section of the highway would be completed shortly. ' The first batch of Auckland unem- • ployed arrived to work on Hauraki Plains on Thursday, when 20 men went linto camp at Ngarua Ferry. They will work under the Lands Drainage Department on drain construction.
