PREPARATION FOR SUMMER WORK RECONSTRUCTION OF ROADS During the period since the last meeting, outside works had been chiefly restricted to'maintenance operations, stated the engineer, Mr. J. R. Page, in his report to the meeting of the Manukau County Council today. Provisions of various kinds had 'been made to avoid delays with construction works during the summer months. Surveys and compilation of data in connection with the proposed new water supply scheme in the Mangere riding had been carried on continuously and were well forward. Plans for the reconstruction and paving of the Panmure-Howick main highway had been completed and further nedessary steps were being taken. Tenders had been invited for the widening and improving of the Bucklands Beach Road, and the lowest tender of £l4O 13s 6d had been accepted. The work had been commenced.
The Main Highways Board wrote advising the payment of £961 5s 4d to the council’s account, to be credited to the ridings as follows:—Mangere, £4O 4s lid; Pakuranga, £9B Is 7d; Papakura, £2O 13s; Papatoetoe, £396 13s; Turanga, £73 3s sd; Wairoa, £72 14s 6d; plant account, £5 Is 3d; Papa-toetoe-Howick main highway account, £127 5s 9d; Bucklands Beach Road Government grant, £127 7s lid. A letter was received from the Department of Health drawing attention to the menace to health by the breeding of mosquitoes and requesting that the council do all in its power to destroy breeding places. The No. 2 District Highways Council wrote forwarding proposals for the reconstruction of the Tamaki River Bridge. The estimated cost of No. 1 proposal was £9,377 and No. 2 proposal £5,154, and the council asked if the Manukau Council was prepared to consider the suggestion for the reconstruction of the bridge.
