RESIGNING SHORTLY
MR. MORTON TO LEAVE TRANSPORT BOARD
STATEMENT TO THE SUN A definite statement that he intended very shortly to resign his seat on the Transport Board was made to The Sun this afternoon by Mr. F. S. Morton, a member representing Onehunga and other local bodies in No. 3 area. Mr. Morton became prominent before the public in this connection last April, when he stated that he intended to resign during the first week in May. He continued, however, to hold his seat. Mr. Morton’s object in waiting until May before resigning was to force an election for his vacant seat. The Transport Act stipulated that any local body representative could be withdrawn and another appointed, or the same member reappointed if the appointment were made before the end of May, 1929. After that date an election would be necessary. The representative from Onehunga had hoped, he said, that by causing an election he would influence the Government to require an immediate election throughout the whole transport district. Mr. Morton, however, decided to retain his seat until the present day, when a new announcement is made.
Mr. Morton says he is proceeding to South Africa for a rest.
