ELLERSLIE TRIALS

MODERATE TASKS NOVICES SCHOOL i It is customary, after a couple of da vs’ racing for trainers to terrain | from marking h ;^ u ', “pera'iiom at r Ellersl i ie since the recent meeting have by no means been imU • However, proceedings at heudqua rtei s this morning, although not unduly inI teresting. showed improvement on - vn - y .1 ■ ■- - ; - - nito engagements in t ion. .. . t Weather conditions were splendid at EUerslie this morning, and No. - glass track, which was at trainers disposal, provided really good going. IV Kemp had both King Emerald and Gold Money in attendance but only the former was required to woik, his task being once round at threequarter pace. Front almost a stand. Brampton and Patutalii (the new members of J. Buchanan’s team) ran live furlongs m 1.10 4-5, but as may be gauged from the time, they had plenty in resort e. War Officer and lvawainga covered tho last four of six furlongs in 57, and were together at the end. Palmares had the three-year-old Gemlight to assist him oxer six furlongs, in 1.20 4-5, and both accomplished their tasks well, finishing on terms. The first two furlongs were carved out in 27, and three in 40. For six furlongs Respirator registered 1.24 3-5, but it was only a serviceable task. Importer covered a round easily, but was not timed. Me did it nicely. For Auckland Cup? Corinax went evenly throughout a round in 1.50 4-5, not being bustled at any part of the work-out. Me is looking blight and has evidently improved with the race he had on the second day at Ellerslie recently. Taneriri and the two-year-old Alanawhenua moved over four furlongs in 52 2-5, and the former was under restraint at the post. For a similar distance Praetor and Alloy recorded 51 1-5, and they had little between them. Bennie was leading Lady’s Boy at the end of a round, the last seven furlongs taking 1.37 2-5. They are both engaged at Trentham at the end of the month, hut the handicaps, declared today, may decide whether the trip will eventuate. Wild Country and Thunderstorm ran their half-mile in 52 2-5. and were neck and neck at the finish. Miamond Queen slipped over three furlongs in 3S, showing a brilliancy which was not demonstrated in her last two races. Good Boy sprinted half a mile in 52 4-5, and hit out nicely. It should not be long before he is returned a winner. After schooling, Master Clements covered six furlongs in 1.22 3-5, and for a similar trial Some Lady and Operatic were together in 1.20 3-5. There were several other horses also worked on the grass, but they were only required to go steadily. Master Clements (A. McGregor), essayed two schooling hurdles satisfactorily, and over two smaller fences Bonny May (A. McGregor) might have jumped better had there been more pace on. Mountain Guide (McNeil) pleased better than • Automne (H. Jones) over six spooling hurdles. The former has the makings of a good jumper.

WANGANUI NOTES TRAINING OPERATIONS Conditions were really good on Saturday morning for track work at the Wanganui course, some of the candidates for the Masterton and Waverley meeting being seen out. There was a good sole of grass on No. 1 track, on which the fast work was done, and in consequence the times recorded were not quite so electric as is usually the case at this stage of the season, records the "Chronicle.” The first out was Auctioneer, who moved freely in an effort over six furlongs. Timed over five, he ran the distance in 1.5 2-5, the first portion of the journey being rather slow. Star Area and Potoaform were associated in a gallop over a mile, but were timed from the seven furlong peg. The first quarter took them 26 2-5 and the half-mile 52 1-5, while they covered five furlongs in 1.5, taking 28 2-5 for the last two furlongs for the seven to take 1.33 2-5. They were on terms at the finish, but, although Potoaform was moving well, Star Area was going well within himself. He should come to hand much earlier this season than was the case last year. Well out all the way, the speedy Banket covered four furlongs in a shade over 52, the first furlong taking 12 2-5 and the quarter 25sec. The two-year-old Arisus and Just an Idea were companions over three furlongs, a task which was accomplished in 37sec. Just an Idea was on the outside of his companion, who had a slight advantage at the end, but the first-named was not bustled. None the Worse Vertigern, who did not suffer any ill effects through his racing at Ellerslie, looked in great order when lie was seen in a five-furlong effort, which took him a tick over 1.4. Warflame and Grecian were to have been accompanied by one of C. Gordon’s team, but the last-named was of no use to them. The pair were on terms at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 1-5, the first two of which took them 25 2-5 and the three 37 4-5. Talisker and Count Palatine took 1.16 3-5 to cover six furlongs from practically a flat-footed start. Count Palatine getting the better of the hopoff. The first two furlongs took them 25 4-5 and the half-mile 50 1-5. Fernden was not hustled over the last two of five furlongs, taking 1.6 2-5. the first quarter being covered in a smart 23 4-5 and the three furlongs taking 35 4-5. The Redfern gelding is a smart mover. Report has it that the reason for the absence of Laughing Prince’s name from the list of horses engaged at the Ellerslie summer meeting is that the son of Quantock and Martian Princess has gone amiss, being affected in one of his joints. If the report be true it is rather unfortunate for Air. T. A. Muncan, for it appeared as if Laughing Prince was well set to add still further to his winning account during the present season.
