WAR-TIME REMINDER
BLASTING OF BIG ROCK CLEARANCE FOR SEAPLANES It was a reminder of the Great War. There was a terrific explosion. Houses shook, windows rattled and th-e waters of the Waitemata rose for a height of 50 feet with all the uncanniness of a v/ater-spout in mid-ocean. An airplane went buzzing by. r j'HUS, on Saturday afternoon, were the residents of Reach Haven. Birkdale, treated to a thrill when a rock off Beach Haven wharf was blown up to make a clearance for seaplanes and flying-boats using the harbour from the base at Hobsonville. The Beach Haven cabaret was one of the many buildings which shook with the explosion, but the owners had been advised well beforehand of the blasting of the rock, and all necessary precautions against damage were taken. All windows were opened. Immediately after the explosion many dead fish were floating on the surface, and many swiftly rowed dinghys were seen to leave the shore for an easy haul. Blasting operations were continued again today.
