CHINESE PICNIC

REPUBLIC’S ANNIVERSARY More than 500' Chinese and Europeans visited Pine Island yesterday when the Chinese community of Auckland celebrated the 18th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Republic. The trip to the island was made in the ferry steamer Peregrine which was colourfully decorated with Chinese flags and banners. Various addresses were given at the island, one in particular being that given by a young Chinese who had recently returned to the Dominion from China, where he had been attending college. A sports programme was decided during the afternoon, the results being as follow:—Children’s Race, 75yds: Willie Doo, 1:0. Youk Joe, 2. Girls’ handicap, 75yds: R. Doidge, 1; I Wall Lee, 2. Apple-eating competition: It. Arvold, 1; Pong Cheu Git, 2. 100yds handicap: Carter. 1; Henley,2. Threelegged race: A. Chan and On Kee, 1; Wong Gee Yee and Wong Hoy Kai, 2. Shoe race, 200yds: N. Doo, 1; Henley, 2. Tug-of-war: X. Ah Chee’s team, 1. Married women’s race: Mrs. Weylie, 1; Mrs. Saroly, 2.
