SHIP BRETAGNE LOST
AWARUA S.O.S. MYSTERY SOLVED CREW THOUGHT TO BE SAFE (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.10 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. A radio mesage has been received that the ship Bretagne, bound for Samoa from San Francisco, is a total loss. It is assumed that the crew is safe. It is thought that the mysterious S.O.S. message which was received by the Bluff radio station was from the ill-fated vessel. There is some doubt about the ship’s identity. She may be a Danish motor-ship of J,177 tons, or an auxiliary schooner of 1,02 S tons, both cf the same name. The Secretary of the New Zealand Post Office on Thursday received the following information from the superintendent of the radio station at Awarua, Southland: —“At 7.50 p.m. a station on continuous wave, at strength 4, sent ‘S.O.S. CQ’ once. Nothing lias been heard since. All stations released at 9 p.m., with instructions to keep a sharp lookout.'* As the cable message says, it is not known which Brefagne has been lost. The o, 177-ton Danish motor-ship, which is owned by a Copenhagen firm, was built there last year. The other Bretagne is an old fourmasted French schooner, built at Harrington, England, in 1872. Her port of registry is Papeete, and her owner is L. Ozanne.
