BOMBAY DEVIATION

HIGHWAYS BOARD MAY ALTER ALIGNMENT * A QUESTION OF FUNDS If the Main Highways Board can fail in with the ideas of a better alignment of the Bombay deviation, as suggested by the Auckland Automobile Association, this will probably be done. However, the question of funds will play an important part in the final decision to do away with the curves which the automobile people have suggested are too sharp. The question of concreting the deviation rests with the Franklin County Council. If the council is willing to pay its share the Highways Board will also contribute toward the cost. Originally the scheme to have the whole of the main road between Auckland and Hamilton permanently surfaced was to occupy five years, and it is expected that the programme will be carried out in that time. Nineteen miles of concrete have been laid from Auckland to Papakura, and there is a big stretch of bitumen between Ohinewai and Meremere, taking in the town of Huntly. There are 88 miles of main highway between Auckland and Hamilton and of this 31 miles have been laid down in either concrete or bitumen. Although the public is at present using the deviation at Bombay this is because the notice board prohibiting the use of the road there ivas cut down by some person unknown. No immediate decision to do away with the curves of the deviation has been made by the Main Highways Board. Perhaps some of the unemployed may be used in doing this work.
