WORLD-WIDE WEATHER REPORTS. —A plan whereby 1,000 ships of all nationalities w*ould co-operate in a worldwide scheme for the transmission of weather reports by wireless, tne number allotted by each country being proportional to its share of the world's tonnage, was propounded, at the conference of Empire Meteorologists in London recently by Captain L. A. Brooke-Smith, R.N.. marine superintendent of the London Meteorological Office. The plan had been mooted at the International Conference on the Safety of Life at Sea, which met in London in the spring. Captain Brooke-Smith said that the office was founded in 1554 for the purpose of collecting and discussing observations from the sea. It maintained a fleet of about 500 regular observing ships, the officers of which were for the time being the corps of voluntary marine observers. Their activities extended wherever the British Ensign was carried at sea, and they were so selected that their sailing schedules provided, as far as possible, a constant network of observations ail over the oceans.
