“THE JAZZ SINGER”

BIG ATTRACTION COMING TO STRAND

The great power for good that lies in every picture is something few people realise. The picture-goer views a film and is impressed with it. Parts l of it will thrill him. Possibly some of | it gives a new vision of life to him. It would surprise him to know that the same reactions are experienced by a million other picture-goers. Plays—successful ones—cater for many thousands but motion pictures cater for millions. As an example one might mention A 1 Jolson's “The Jazz Singer.” Before this film was three months old it had been witnessed by over half a million people. In the first twelve weeks of its season in New York it attracted nearly I a quarter of a million people. On the first day of its release in twelve principal American cities it attracted over a hundred thousand people. It can be seen from this that to attract a million people would not be anything remarkable for this picture. When it is screened in Auckland and it is to be presented at the Strand next Friday, there is no knowing just how many people will view it. Fortunately this influence is good for | ‘‘The Jazz Singer’’ is an appealing | story of the son of the cantor, who ran [ away from home and became a famous I singer of jazz in cabarets and on the stage, and his great sacrifice for his dying father.
