EMIL JANNINGS IN “BETRAYAL” Gorgeous scenery and 'novelty of theme add an unusual note to Emil Jannings’s latest American masterpiece, “Betrayal,” which is now at the Tivoli Theatre, complete with sound accompaniment. Two leading featured players, Esther Ralston and Gary Cooper, carry important supporting roles in this powerful drama set In the Swiss Alps. Jannings’s quick rise to fame on the American screen was marked by live epic pictures, including “The Wav of All Flesh” and “The Patriot.” The sixth in this great series, “Betrayal,” places Jannings in an entirely new environment and offers him a story worthy of his great histrionic power. Jannings, by a family arrangement, marries it young girl already in love with a young artist. Jannings is the typical, home-loving, good-natured and self-centred burgher and, to this character, be brings all his wonderful interpretative art. Esther Ralston plays the part of the girl wife and Garry Cooper is her youthful sweetheart. The infinite care and tireless attention to detail which . went into the making of “Betrayal” are evident throughout. Swiss customs and costumes are minutely copied and tlie outdoor photography is wonderfully well done. The scenes are colourful, the unusual costumes oC the “peasants” being particularly effective against tho majestic, snow-covered backgrounds of mountain country. The Tivoli programme also includes a number of particularly enjoyable short talkie features.
